Surf Sweets/Tru Joy Sweets {Healthy Halloween Haul #6}

It’s the night before Halloween, and this is the final installment of my Healthy Halloween Haul Series!

TruSweets (Tru Joy & Surf Sweets) are sister companies owned by Wholesome Sweets (sellers of natural sweeteners and organic sugars). And let me tell you…this candy is the *REAL DEAL*.

You can hear more specifics about each candy in my “Healthy Halloween Haul” YouTube video, but take a look at these pictures:

The organic fruit chews are *BETTER* than starburst. The texture is identical, but the taste is far superior.

The fruity bears? A HUGE hit amongst my entire family. They’re just like little bear shaped “fruit slice,” candies….and they have a grapefruit flavor!!!!!!

The jelly beans are excellent, as well, and they also have a grapefruit flavor. All of these great tasting grapefruit candies have me *quite* excited, as you can tell.

Spooky Spiders are great gummies that I think would be a huge hit on Halloween.

Head over to and buy as many of these as you possibly can and eat them as quickly as humanly possible!!!! (Okay…probably *don’t* do that, but you get the point πŸ˜‰)

Sjaak’s {Healthy Halloween Haul #5}

White chocolate skulls? Melk Chocolate? We must be talking about Sjaak’s!

Sjaak’s is a vegan/all natural chocolate and confectionary company based out of Petaluma (NorCal represent!!!) that sent me some treats to review.

I received some of their filled chocolate bars, a white chocolate skull, and some Eli’s earth bars.

The melk chocolate smells milky, and maintains a creamy texture. The dairy milk is *not* missed. These bars use rice milk as a base, which adds an extra dimension of flavor. The chocolate has a great snap, and a mouthfeel quite reminiscent of a traditional chocolate bar. The peanut butter filled bar was my personal favorite! Two thumbs up!

The Eli’s earth bars were tasty, but they didn’t “wow,” me like the filled bars. There was nothing bad about them. They were good quality vegan chocolate bars, but, in my opinion, they didn’t have the same special quality the bars did.

The white chocolate skull was *AMAZING* It was creamy and not overly sweet. It used a rice milk base, and was sweetened primarily with brown rice syrup. Truly, a home run! This was the only thing (out of the entire Healthy Halloween Haul Series) that I didn’t share with my family. I’m greedy for good white chocolate hahaha

Head over to their website & order some for yourself ( ) If you live in Northern California…take a day trip to beautiful Petaluma, hit up the best farmer’s market around, and pop in to Sjaak’s storefront.

Glee {Healthy Halloween Haul #4}

Glee /gle/ noun; great delight

Verve is an awesome company that specializes in all natural, non gmo gum (Glee Gum) and gum pops (Glee Gum Pops). All their products are gluten free, vegetarian, and kosher, and their 6 classic glee gum flavors are certified fair trade.

Glee Gum Pops were a huge hit with my family. Green Apple was my personal favorite. They were crunchy, sweet, and filled with delicious gum. Unlike a traditional blowpop, the gum center takes a bit of chewing before it truly turns to gum.
Glee Gum comes in a variety of traditional and non traditional flavors, including cinnamon, refresh-mint, mixed berry, and tangerine. They come in cute little squares, and are available in traditional and sugar free (xylitol sweetened) varieties. They’re flavorful, and have an excellent texture. My favorite flavor was tangerine.

Guess what?

Glee is so wonderful that they offered me a discount code to give you lovely people. Use the code: CRUNCHY for 15% off everything. (offer ends 11/30/16)

Use the code at their webstore.

YumEarth {Healthy Halloween Haul #3}

YumEarth is one of my favorite healthy candy companies. I’ve worked with them several times in the past, and they never disappoint. I love working with them 😊

I knew if I was doing a Halloween Haul, YumEarth *had* to be apart of it!

YumEarth are truly pioneers in their field, and were one of the first to on the market.

They sent me some of their scrumptious fruit snacks, fabulous lollipops, and, a brand new treat to me, sour beans.

β€’Before I go onto the sour beans, I’d like to share a fun little story: In a public speaking course at my university, I performed a demonstrative speech about blogging. I used YumEarth’s lollipops as my visual aid, and passed them out while I was speaking. They were a *huge* hit. Everyone loved them, and truly couldn’t believe they were all natural.β€’

“Beans with Attitude”. Ahhh, that never fails to crack me up. The marketing for these beans is pure genius. You guys know I am a sucker for adorable packaging and anthropomorphic food πŸ’–

These beans are vegan, which most jelly candies aren’t. They are peanut/tree nut free, gluten free, and contain no artificial flavors or dyes.

{These beans do have, “natural sugar,” which I’m definitely not an advocate of, but for people who aren’t whacked out sugar addicts like me, you’ll be totally fine}

The texture of these sour beans is identical to that of a traditional jelly bean: crisp, crunchy shell, and a chewy interior.

The sourness level on these beans is very kid friendly, which I appreciate. You get a sour punch, but it doesn’t lock your jaw. For me, the balance of sweet and sour is perfect. My younger brother thought these beans were great, too!

Sour Beans, and any YumEarth product, would be a fun, healthy, and kid friendly addition to any Halloween festivities.

SmartSweets {Healthy Halloween Haul #2}

We’re back at it again, talking about another healthy candy (oxymoron? I think not!)…SMARTSWEETS.

Today’s selection is the healthiest of any of the candies I received for Halloween.

SmartSweets are sweetened with stevia (NO SUGAR ALCOHOLS!), are nut allergy friendly, gluten/dairy/soy free, contain nothing artificial, have 24g of plant based fiber, have 5g of protein, & have only 9g of net carbs.

These gummies tasted wonderful! They came in two varieties: original and sour. The flavors were accurate to the fruit they represented. They each had a distinct taste. There was not a strong stevia aftertaste. They were bright and effervescent to the palette.

I must warn you, though, the sour gummies are VERY sour when they first hit your tongue. It tones down quickly, but the initial sour punch is intense to say the least. If you don’t *love* sour, definitely go for the original gummies.

Now, onto the texture. These gummies seem quite tough/sticky at first. I am sure this is simply a result of the amount of fiber they contain. This issue didn’t affect my overall eating experience, because it can be easily solved by warming the gummies in your mouth for a few moments before chewing 😊 If you let the gummies warm up a bit, the texture becomes very similar to that of a typical gummy bear.

As you all know, I have PCOS, which means my blood sugars are completely whacked out. I love that SmartSweets has created a candy option that’s friendly to people suffering from any sort of blood sugar issue or sugar sensitivity.

Eating these gummies left me happy and satiated.

SmartSweets is definitely a candy I’ll purchase in the future! πŸ‘πŸ»

JJ’S COCOMELS {Healthy Halloween Haul #1}Β

Halloween is a few short weeks away, and for crunchy folks that is extra spooky! GMO’s, refined sugars, allergens…EVERYWHERE!!!!!

But never fear, I’m here this week to give you hope. There are healthier alternatives to all those processed treats.

Let’s start the week off with JJ’s COCOMELS

JJ’s COCOMELS are sustainably sourced, organic, non gmo, gluten free, soy free, corn syrup free, vegan (they’re made with coconut milk), and naturally sweetened with brown rice syrup and dried cane syrup.

They are available in four flavors: original, sea salt, vanilla, and espresso.

These caramels are the real deal. Sweet! Creamy! Chewy! Rich! I would dare someone to  tell me that these taste healthy. The texture is spot on. The taste is extraordinary.

My four year old niece is a caramel fiend, and she went crazy for these caramels.

{For those of you who aren’t fans of coconut, I think I should point out that the coconut flavor in these caramels is very mild.}

One thing I especially enjoy about COCOMELS is that they are not sickeningly sweet as a lot of caramels are.

Vanilla is the most *kid friendly* flavor, in my opinion, but my niece enjoyed the Original.

Any child would be happy to get a few of these in there Halloween goodie bag πŸ’–

Big thanks to JJ’s for sending me this lovely treats. Be sure to head over to there website, and follow them on Instagram: @jjscocomels

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today is my birthday!

It was an absolutely wonderful day πŸŒΈπŸ’–

I spent some great time with family and relaxed after a long week of school.

My mother baked me an absolutely DELICIOUS cake! And although it wasn’t healthy (it was filled with gluten and oil πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚), it was 100% naturally sweetened. No white sugar, no brown sugar…just pure maple syrup.

I treated myself to a delicious birthday cake, without going sugar crazy.

I’d say that’s a victory!!!!!

All in all, a blessed day 😘

Just a funny little healthy food meme to brighten up your day β€οΈπŸ’šβ€οΈπŸ’š

I’m a sucker for a good meme…and for good, clean fun!

Did you know laughing for a total of 15 minutes in a day can burn around 40 calories? Man, #laughitup, am I right?!?! Not that calories really matter, but it’s fun to consider laughing the fat away!!!!!

This has me thinking…Did you grow up watching Veggie Tales? Do you watch them with your kids? I’d love to know!

Is the Deck Stacked Against Us?

I played monopoly at my university this afternoon…

“Community Health Monopoly,” was a teaching aid used to parallel life’s trials….to showcase issues such as privelage, the health & wealth gap, and social classification.

Some players started off the game with debt, no insurance, and low paying jobs (realistic, right?). Others started off with excellent insurance, high paying jobs, good educations, and monetary wealth. My “character” represented the middle class:

This game opened up a great conversation about what it means to be healthy and happy, how a person can become those things, and if there are some people who truly just don’t stand a chance.

When you have PCOS, it’s easy to get depressed and feel like you have no chance of “winning.” SNAP OUT OF IT!!!!! Yes, the deck may be stacked against you, but with the right tools, you DO stand a chance! You DO have a bright future. You CAN be healthy and happy. PCOS is an obstacle…but not an impossible one!
