Snack Out Loud {REVIEW}

I am a snacker. I love snacks! When I was a kid, my family had an entire closet in our hallway that was affectionately dubbed, “the snack closet.” Literally, the entire closet was just snacks. Now that I’m the Girl Gone Crunchy, Carolina BBQ Lays and Fiber One Bars, just don’t cut it! BUT, as you all know, sometimes you need something crunchy and savory to curb your snack food craving (for those times when fruits and nuts are not doing it). You need a snack food that tastes great AND is great for you. You need Snack Out Loud.

Snack Out Loud is a Colorado based company dedicated to making the healthiest, most delectable snack foods available.Take a look at these beauties:

Want to know what makes these snacks so healthy? Beans! Yes, you read that correctly, beans. Pinto beans in the “crunchy bean snacks,” and navy beans in the “power puffs.” And for my Weston Price peeps, the beans ARE soaked before they are made into delicious snacks. HURRAY!!!! Here are some other awesome tidbits about Snack Out Loud snacks. They are organic and NONGMO. They are made in a dedicated nut free room. The few varieties that are made with dairy (most flavors are vegan) are made with kosher dairy. They are packed with protein and fiber and are made with 100% wind power.

Crunchy Bean Snacks have a texture that’s quite similar to a dried chickpea. They’re crunchy, but slightly hollow, which means they aren’t going to crack your teeth OR stick in them. I tried all five flavors: sea salt, jalapeno cheddar, ranch, smoky chipotle bbq, and tomato basil. My personal favorite was the smoky chipotle bbq, but they all had excellent flavor profiles. The Jalapeno Cheddar has a smooth cheesey flavor with a jalapeno kick that hits you in the back of your mouth. The Ranch is quite subtle. It’s not overly tangy and there is no artificial taste. There are some great notes of dill and buttermilk. This particular variety is simple but well developed. Sea Salt is simple. You get a nice, roasted, robust bean flavor that’s accented by a large dosage of course sea salt. Tomato Basil caught me by surprise. It is a very close second, taste wise. I was expecting it to taste sort of like pizza goldfish (random, I know!!!), but, boy, was I wrong. I could actually taste the tomato!!!! When you take your first bite, you’re hit with a shock of basil, but before long, your mouth is filled with the flavor of roasted tomato. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. My favorite flavor, Smoky Chipotle BBQ, has a complex flavor profile that meets all of your taste buds’ needs. It’s sweet, spicy, smoky, and salty all at the same time. The spice does not overtake the subtle undertones running throughout. As the spice slowly dissipates, the sweet and umami notes get a chance to come through. As I said earlier, I thoroughly enjoyed each of these flavors. Each one displays culinary depth, and I could surely see myself munching endlessly on any of them. This might sound crazy, but I would rather eat these than potato chips, and NOT just because they’re much healthier than potato chips.

Power Puffs, not to be confused with the Power Puff Girls, are tasty, crunchy, pillows of goodness. They’re made with navy beans, so they don’t have any bean-y aftertaste. I’m also pretty sure that Power Puffs are the cooler older sister of Cheetos. My Mom loved these so much that she asked me, in all seriousness, to email the Snack Out Loud people and ask them to send me a dozen more bags of these puffs. She wasn’t joking! She’s obsessed with Power Puffs. The Power Puffs come in three flavors. Let’s start with the Salt and Vinegar: nice ratio of salt to vinegar, and not SO heavy on the vinegar that is made my eyes water. Mellow, but poignant. Sweet & Tangy BBQ seemed to come from a formula similar to the Smoky Chipotle BBQ crunchy bean snacks, but with less heat…a well-rounded BBQ flavor. The White Cheddar variety tasted like an elegant less artificial version of a cheez ball. These puffs rocked my world.
