As promised, I am here with yet another chocolate review. Obviously it’s been a nice couple of weeks for me, I mean, chocolate…chocolate…and more chocolate! In the words of the wondrous Ina Garten, “How bad can that be?”
Today’s chocolate is brought to you by Alter Eco, a San Francisco based company (NorCal Represent!!!!) that is dedicated, not only to scrumptious food, but to sustainable farming & manufacturing processes. Alter Eco’s primary goal is to, “Create a flourishing planet through being socially just, environmentally responsible, and reliably delicious.” This entails working directly with farmers, planting nearly ten thousand trees, and using only the most natural ingredients available. Raw sugar cane, cacao beans, and fleur de sel are just a few of the pure components that make up Alter Eco Chocolate.
I got in touch with Cat Gieser, Alter Eco’s marketing coordinator, and she kindly had three full sized bars sent to me. Thanks Cat 🙂
Now isn’t that sweet?
I was sent Dark Quinoa, Deep Dark Salted, and Dark Salted Brown Butter.
Before I give you the rundown on each flavor, let me just say that Alter Eco Chocolates are some of the best I’ve ever eaten. They’re smooth and creamy, but still maintain that signature chocolate bar crunch. I like to call this texture combination “the good ol’ crack n cream.” I highly doubt that will ever catch on, but we’ll see 😉
Alter Eco Chocolate possesses berry undertones. If that statement made no sense to you, then you probably haven’t read my previous chocolate reviews! Here’s a little refresher course…Most chocolate falls into three categories: mesquite, coffee, and berry. Berry is my personal favorite, so I was pleasantly surprised that Alter Eco fell into that particular category.
You’re probably scratching your head right now. Quinoa and chocolate? It doesn’t sound especially appetizing, but, let me assure you, it is. Have you ever had a Nestle Crunch? The “crunch” comes from puffed rice. This dark quinoa chocolate bar follows that same pattern, but uses puffed quinoa instead of puffed rice. Because the quinoa is “puffed,” not boiled or steamed, there is no earthy quinoa aftertaste. THANK GOODNESS! It really has no taste at all, but it adds a great textural dimension. Quinoa, when puffed, is larger and crunchier than rice, and pairs well with the robust dark chocolate.
DEEP DARK SALTED
Dark chocolate and sea salt are a fantastic pairing. What’s more fantastic, though, is the fact that this chocolate only has FOUR ingredients: cacao beans, raw cane sugar, cocoa butter, and fleur de sel. That’s just about as good as it gets when it comes to chocolate! Completely vegan, soy free, gluten free, and no additives. When you first bite into this bar, you’re hit with the full-bodied chocolate. While you’re savoring that…BOOM! The fleur de sel bites you on the tongue. You’re not quite sure what’s going on, but you know you’re loving it.
DARK SALTED BROWN BUTTER
If you’re a vegan….please stop reading! This description is so tantalizing that it will most assuredly create a green beast of envy that can only be satisfied by THIS bar. Well…you’ve been warned.
This wasn’t JUST a chocolate bar, it was an experience. First off, this bar smells like sweet caramel. You bite into it, and, for half a second, you taste caramel. Next comes the salted dark chocolate, bitter and rich. SUDDENLY, just as the sun rises from the dark clouds on a cool morning, so comes the creamy browned butter. It’s smooth and sweet, like a milky caramel, and gives the chocolate a perfect finish. When something is especially tasty, my younger brother says, “My taste buds just became taste bros.” I believe now would be an appropriate time to use that expression.
Alter Eco is a trustworthy company that spends as much time saving the earth as they do making delicious chocolate. A DEFINITE repurchase.
