Do you ever feel like people don’t take your healthy lifestyle seriously? I know I do. Because I’m not super skinny, or ripped with muscles from head to toe, I feel like my fellow healthy folks don’t take me seriously. I’m not fat, but I couldn’t be called thin either. When I tell people about my healthy lifestyle, it’s as if they’re simply nodding at me, waiting for me to quit talking, while they secretly wonder if I’m really as healthy as I claim. “I bet she doesn’t really exercise 5 days a week.” “She doesn’t eat sugar? Surrrrre…” “Does she practice what she preaches?” It may seem extreme, and, for all I know, I could be completely off, but it’s something I just can’t shake.
This wouldn’t bother me if I didn’t work so hard. If I were an average person, with a fully functional endocrine system, I’d be ROCKIN fitness model status by now…but I’m not. I have PCOS. I work 4x as hard and see 1/4 of the results. I’m not complaining. I could have it worse…much worse. The difficult thing is, though, PCOS is somewhat personal. It’s not something I talk candidly about with those I’m not close with. If I reference it to an acquaintance or casual friend, I usually say “I have a hormone issue,” and leave it at that. I wish there was a way to let people know that I devoutly practice what I preach regarding health and nutrition.
To my fellow healthy folks:
If you feel like you aren’t taken seriously, stay strong. Understand that you’re not being healthy for your friends, acquaintances, or even you’re family. You’re being healthy for YOU. Take it from me, someone who took a while to catch on to that important truth. And don’t assume everyone</em is judging you…took me a while to catch on to that one too!
If you find yourself judging your healthy friends, and questioning their private choices…DON’T. You never know what a person is going through. Everyone’s body is unique. Every person is unique.
In the end, be confident in how you live your life, don’t judge others for the way they live theirs (or you think they live theirs), and the world will be a much better place!
